When asses.masses plays Ghent, the donkeys speak Flemish

Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim’s seven-hour game for a theater audience reaches VIERNULVIER, in a translation the room ends up reading aloud.

“asses.masses is coming to GHENT in Flemish!” So says the announcement the show posted to Instagram on October 7, and the last two words are the news. On Saturday, November 7, at 1 p.m., Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim’s game about a herd of unemployed donkeys takes over the Domzaal at VIERNULVIER, the arts center in Ghent’s De Vooruit building, and holds it until about 10 p.m.: one controller, a room of strangers, 10 episodes, four intermissions, dinner included.

From the asses.masses teaser: one player at a time steps up to the controller while the herd watches. The full teaser, with sound, is on the makers’ site.

If Ghent is out of reach, the herd plays Lisbon on October 24 and 25, the MCA Chicago on November 8, Dublin’s Beta Festival on November 14, and Belfort, France, on January 30.

Killscreen follows games after they leave the storefront: into theaters, into museums and into whatever language the room speaks. The free newsletter is how the next one reaches you.
