The Op reissues two Weast Coast games in smaller boxes

Snakes of Wrath and Desperate Oasis get mass-market editions while the studio's handsome originals wait on a factory restock.

The Op—the mass-market wing of USAopoly, whose catalog is mostly licensed editions of things you already know—announced a partnership with the two-person-scale studio Weast Coast Games this summer, reissuing two of its duelers in cheaper, more portable editions: Snakes of Wrath, a tile-laying game, and Desperate Oasis, a spatial lane battler. Both are in stores now, with wider distribution promised later this year; The Op lists Desperate Oasis at $10.95, and the pair was first announced in February ahead of New York Toy Fair with launches at Walmart.

What interests me is what a reissue like this keeps and what it sheds. Weast Coast's original Snakes of Wrath is a deliberate object: 90 two-sided tiles, wooden privacy racks, a custom canvas snake sack, and a promise that the game grows into "a handsome art piece on your table" as the tiled ouroboros tangles. The Op edition compresses that identity into a small red box whose best feature is the studio's box copy, which survived intact: "Play a friend, make an enemy."

The timing makes the bet legible. As of this writing, the studio's own edition of Snakes of Wrath is out of stock while Weast Coast waits on a factory shipment—so the mass edition is briefly the only way to get the game at all. A boutique object becomes a system in a smaller box, and we find out whether the system alone was the point. It is the exact inverse of the question we asked in April, when we wondered why board games deserve better furniture. Sometimes they deserve a backpack instead.
