TerminalDev's open-world city is drawn entirely in ASCII
A pseudonymous solo dev is building a multiplayer crime sandbox with no 3D models or shaders
Everything on screen is a character you could type. The account TerminalDev claims a GTA-style multiplayer open world built with no 3D models and no shaders: streets, cars, headlights, all of it drawn in text. The clip looks like a terminal window hallucinating a city. What can be verified is thin, and worth being plain about: there is no store page and no build to download, just reels and a bio stating the project’s premise.
ASCII as a serious renderer has a lineage games keep returning to—Dwarf Fortress most famously, and Cogmind, which showed roguelikes weren’t done with ASCII back in 2016. We were charmed by an ASCII New York as far back as 2011. What is different here is scale and genre: the most maximalist template in games, the open-world crime sandbox, forced through the most minimal display idiom we have. It recalls a time when multiplayer worlds really did live inside terminals.
The developer is openly asking followers whether the thing deserves finishing. On the evidence of the replies, the answer is already in.
Solo developers doing improbable things surface on the Radar before they surface anywhere else. The letter is free.
