Team Lazerbeam has posted two years of sketchbook pages from Shroom and Gloom, billed as the first of two parts. The Cape Town studio's game entered Steam Early Access on Sept. 10, published by Devolver Digital, and every surface in it is drawn by hand.
From the Early Access launch trailer for Shroom and Gloom. The full trailer with sound is on Steam.
Shroom and Gloom is a first-person dungeon roguelike built as a double-deckbuilder. One deck handles combat: players stab, season, skewer, roast and eat fungal enemies, and the right chain of cards cooks several of them into a soup. The second deck handles the dungeon itself, with maps, lockpicks and campfires. Every action in the game is a card.
The project began as a prototype at a seven-day first-person-shooter jam in 2021, became a free itch.io build in 2024 and signed with Devolver in 2025. Team Lazerbeam's earlier games include Snow Cones, Wrestling With Emotions and Teenage Blob. Killscreen spoke with the studio's Ben Rausch in 2016 about Dress To Express Dancing Success, a dancing and dating sim.
