Playing FIFA doesn’t feel like TV, and it doesn’t feel like a live match. Here’s why it feels just right.

No place to hide. This is what we say to ourselves, about ourselves, when we’ve erred publicly, irrevocably, painfully. It captures the nightmare of complete exposure. The phrase locates us in some indeterminate yet atmospherically distressing space—imagining us there, open, unprotected, on the spot, all too visible. Outside.

Often we’ve made a mistake, overlooked a crucial detail, miscalculated a sum, an angle, or a few words; or been lazy, lackadaisical, or simply unlucky—all ways of describing some catastrophic dropping of the proverbial ball.
