The diving game genre just got more beautiful and weird

When I heard that the guys behind Natural Selection 2—the fantastically strange esport about adaptive alien alligators ripping military men to shreds—were doing a diving game, I thought no way can this be a warm-hearted, Flipper-loving, scuba diving game. That’s far too normal, as these gorgeous new screens of Subnautica coming out out of PAX prove.

Filled with strange bulbous plant life and prehistoric fish with protracted jaws, it looks like a particularly sinister Endless Ocean, which already scared the shit out of me. People who’ve played it say its a soothing game of undersea exploration, filled with open-world of alien ecosystems where you build bases and that sort of thing. But I’m not buying the relaxing it. Not with these screens.
