The audience writes the bars Degular raps

Degular labels data for a living. By night it raps. dmstfctn's character, trained to describe the world in objective, manageable language, keeps hitting the wall every data worker knows: some things refuse the label. Big things coming (human in the loop), the duo's new commission for Somerset House's 3 Evenings series, turns that failure into a show, and it hands the training data to you. Play the language game at playground.dmstfctn.net and the words you feed Degular shape what it can say.

A selection of the crowd's lines will be voiced and recorded by the rapper Jawnino for a screening at 3 Evenings: Sunday on Oct. 18, at Wapping Hydraulic Power Station in east London, and on the project's interactive channel 3ETV afterward.

Degular's story has been building all year. This is part three of GOD MODE, dmstfctn's trilogy of real-time works about anomalous AI built in game engines; the July chapter at Chemist Gallery ran as a live game-engine animation set in a deliberately lossy simulation of the London Docklands, Canary Wharf always on the horizon and never reachable, with the engine cueing a fog machine in the gallery at key moments. Killscreen covered the duo's case for game engines as stagecraft earlier this year. The Oct. 18 performance is ticketed and 18 and over; the game is free and open to anyone with a browser.
