Beautiful Apocalypse
Composer Gustavo Santaolalla scores the end of man.
As a music-obsessed teenager living in the suburbs of Buenos Aires in the 1960s, Oscar-winning musician Gustavo Santaolalla (pronounced ‘San-ta-oh-lah-yah’), scored his first paid gig as a composer. “I did that for a high school friend’s amateur film called Las Estatuas (The Statues),” remembers Santaolalla. “It was a silent film about statues that came to life at night. He knew I was a musician, because I started my first band when I was ten. It’s funny thinking back on that now.” While the term “film score” may be somewhat amusing when applied to Las Estatuas’ brushed drums and cymbals, that experience sparked a lifelong passion for visual art in the Argentine artist/producer.
