Announcing Soundplay, a music and games arcade featuring M83, Cut Copy, Matthew Dear.

Kill Screen, in conjunction with Pitchfork, is proud to announce the launch of Soundplay, an interactive program focused on the intersections of music, gaming, and technology. Kill Screen has commissioned some of our favorite independent game developers to create new, original games inspired by Pitchfork-selected songs we love. These games don’t just use music as a soundtrack; we’ve asked each developer to think of their scenes, characters, and mechanics all through the lens of the song at hand.
The first three games take their inspiration from tracks by M83, Cut Copy, and Matthew Dear. Play them here.
Today, Soundplay launches with Jake Elliott‘s (Ruins, Kentucky Route Zero) game inspired by M83’s “Intro” and Santa Ragione‘s (Fotonica, Mirror Moon) game inspired by Matthew Dear’s “Street Song”. Three more games will follow in July, including one inspired by Cut Copy by acclaimed developer Bennett Foddy (QWOP, GIRP).
Additionally, the 2012 Pitchfork Music Festival will feature the Soundplay Arcade, which will allow fans to play all five games in the series. (Individual day tickets are on sale here.)
Then, in late summer, Kill Screen and Pitchfork will host a two-day game jam in New York, where independent developers will have two days to collectively build games inspired by a piece of music. The games will later be published to the Soundplay website. Pitchfork.tv will film the event.
Thanks to Soundplay‘s sponsor, Intel.
