A free demo turns Pac-Man into first-person baby horror

The reel that carried it—posted by hanzoovv, a gameplay-clips account, not the developer—has 139,000 likes and counting, for demo footage of BREAKOUT BABY: first-person Pac-Man, played as horror, with an infant on your hip.

The structure really is the arcade original's. Collect every pellet on a floor to open the way to the next; something faster than you patrols the corridors between. The additions are what make it 2026: it's a roguelike, it's in first person so the maze reads as architecture instead of diagram, and you are responsible for keeping one extremely unlucky baby alive the whole way down.

The mechanic that does the most work is the grimmest: shaking the baby reveals the locations of nearby enemies. (It's giving BioShock's Little Sisters.) Viewers filed it somewhere between Pac-Man, Luigi's Mansion, and Dark Deception, which is as precise as genre taxonomy gets. The developer is STH, publishing with Assemble Entertainment; a free demo is on Steam and itch.io now, with the full game due this year.

The reception is its own subject. The comments perform a very specific register of ironic parental horror—declarations of maternal devotion to a polygonal infant, parents-in-jest marching their children into the maze. Nobody in the thread is scared; everyone is a caregiver. That's the demo economy on Instagram now: absurdist horror travels not on dread but on the bit it lets the audience do. Pac-Man has absorbed stranger reinventions—we once watched a small Australian team rebuild it entirely—but rarely one that turns the power pellet into a juice box.

We watch how games travel—arcades to art shows to 139,000 Instagram likes. The free Killscreen newsletter is the guided tour.
