Mux Mool, né Brian Lindgren, grew up in rural southeastern Minnesota. His parents separated, each moving multiple times in quick succession, resulting in a childhood approaching nomadism. Between the many homes and friends lost over time, Lindgren learned at an early age how to gather scattered remnants and combine them to form a cohesive whole.

As a teen, he hoped to attend DigiPen, the game design university and alma mater to those responsible for the student project that inspired Valve’s Portal. He never went. After dropping out of high school, he eventually found his way to Oregon where he harvested Christmas trees. All the while, he’d collected records and created loops on borrowed computers, slowly building his own songs out of found shards and drum samples.
