Nearly every major discovery made in childhood comes while doing something you are not supposed to be doing. For children growing up in the ’90s, more often than not, that something was cheating at videogames. Armed with a free afternoon and a Game Genie, a child could sit on the shag carpet, enter cheat codes into games that were too hard or punitive, and blast straight through them. Even Battletoads. The book that came with the Game Genie was crammed full of cheat codes to help young cheaters along. There were codes for infinite lives. Codes for never running out of time. Codes for always spawning with the flamethrower.
