Curator Yuko Hasegawa [announced](https://www.instagram.com/p/DeRKUo-GbnR/?ref=killscreen.com) that the curator will moderate a conversation at the International House of Japan in Tokyo between the philosopher Yuk Hui and Yoichiro Miyake, a game AI developer.

The [event page](https://program.ihj.global/en/events/interdisciplinarytalk13/?ref=killscreen.com) fills in the rest. It is the 13th Interdisciplinary Talk in IHJ Cultural Lobby, the series Hasegawa programs as I-House's director of art and design, and it asks: "what if we understood AI not as one intelligence but as something generated through the interaction of multiple intelligences?" Hui has argued that from the theory side for a decade, under the names cosmotechnics and technodiversity. Technology, in Hui's account, is never one universal thing.

Miyake is one to take note. The AI of *Final Fantasy XV*, which Miyake laid out in a [2020 paper](https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/tjsai/35/2/35%5FB-J64/%5Farticle/-char/en?ref=killscreen.com), splits the thinking three ways: a meta-AI that watches the player and adjusts the game, a character AI that is the brain of every ally, enemy and townsperson, and a navigation AI that reads the terrain. No single mind runs that world. Now a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, Miyake has written books of philosophy for AI builders, one on Eastern thought. "I would rather prioritize establishing a foundation as an existence, even if it doesn't serve a purpose initially," Miyake [told an interviewer in 2023](https://theghostintheshell.jp/en/mma/column/column01?ref=killscreen.com).

Killscreen has met those characters before. Our [2016 piece on the game](https://www.killscreen.com/final-fantasy-xv-wants-next-great-road-trip-cant-shut/) complained that its road trip never went quiet: every time the player relaxed, a companion piped up. I read that differently now. A companion who interrupts is a companion who isn't yours to steer. Wendi Yan's [Daoist puzzle game](https://www.killscreen.com/wendi-yan-inner-carbon-classic-daoist-alchemy/) made the cosmotechnics case from the art side in August. This is the same argument arriving from a commercial engine room.

The talk runs in Japanese and English with interpretation, and I-House's [press release](https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000096.000054811.html?ref=killscreen.com) bills it as a collateral event of Art Week Tokyo. That placement is the news: game AI discussed in a curator's lobby series, across from a philosopher, as a body of thought and not a feature list.

A philosopher seated across from a game AI architect is the kind of meeting almost nobody covers. Killscreen does, three times a week, free.
