*Pigeon: A Love Story* first appeared in 2021 as a lockdown experiment with one question behind it: what happens when you stretch a collectathon to the scale of an entire city? Then the commercial map-tile service it was built on shut down, and [the game simply stopped existing](https://www.wristwork.com/pigeon?ref=killscreen.com) — a romance ended by an API deprecation. The rebuild, out August 6 on [Steam.](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3876710/Pigeon%5FA%5FLove%5FStory/?ref=killscreen.com)

[](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3876710/Pigeon%5FA%5FLove%5FStory/?ref=killscreen.com), the App Store, Google Play and itch.io for $7.99, runs on open-source maps instead. The thing it depends on can no longer be switched off by a vendor.

You are a pigeon. Somewhere over a to-scale London, New York, Tokyo, Paris or Amsterdam (“every building, every street, and every pigeon (we did the math)) per the London studio Wristwork — is your soulmate, one specific bird among hundreds of thousands of autonomous ones. You call out; most reject you politely, in little speech bubbles (“I'm flattered, but no”); a few drop clues. There is an optional Speak-to-Coo feature that listens for actual cooing through your microphone, an eight-player “coo”-op mode, and a passive mode that turns the whole simulation into a screensaver if you would rather just birdwatch. The score is by Madwreck.

What reads as a joke is also a small piece of infrastructure art. The first version died of platform dependency; the second one courts on the same open cartographic commons the actual city runs on, and the pigeon is about the gentlest argument for open data anyone has made. Steam players agree so far: 94 percent positive since launch.

Bird romance has a lineage here! [*Hatoful Boyfriend*](https://www.killscreen.com/hatoful-boyfriendisnt-quite-weird-it-thinks/) made pigeon love a genre gag a decade ago and *Skate Story* heavily featured pigeons as a devilish foil. *Pigeon: A Love Story* plays it completely straight, and slower.
