James Cameron’s *Avatar* proved the awesome potential of 3D technology for entertainment today. But in a [recent interview](http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/17/movies/baz-luhrmann-puts-the-great-gatsby-into-3-d.html?hpw&ref=killscreen.com) for *The New York Times*, director Baz Luhrmann said he hopes new films will embrace the technology’s potential for experiences beyond sheer spectacle:

> He spoke of using 3-D not to create thrilling vistas or coming-at-you threats, but rather to find a new intimacy in film. He referred particularly to a climactic scene in which Daisy’s husband, Tom Buchanan (played by Joel Edgerton), confronts Mr. DiCaprio’s Gatsby in a suite at the Plaza hotel, all in three dimensions.

It seems like a question that filmmakers and game designers alike will have in the back of their heads for years to come.
