# When a car throws a hook mid-air, driving becomes flight

Isaac Cohen, the engineer-toymaker who publishes as Cabbibo, has been flipping through old sketchbooks in public lately, and a sketch showing [showing Moon Ball](https://www.instagram.com/p/DYnqSrCk6mO/?ref=killscreen.com) stopped me cold. It is *Rocket League* by way of Brandon Sanderson: drive a rocket car, throw out a "hook" mid-air, and slingshot yourself around the map—Cohen's translation of Lashing, the gravity-binding magic from Sanderson's *The Stormlight Archive* novels, into a verb you can press.

The good news is that [Moon Ball is real and free](https://cabbibo.itch.io/moon-ball?ref=killscreen.com)—a Windows release Cohen describes on itch as "*Rocket League*, but slow, pointless and trippy." The itch page also reveals a second, earthier source for the movement feel: BMX. Cohen grew up riding and wanted the game to channel the riders who don't do tricks so much as flow around space—Sergio Layos, Ruben Alcantara, Chase Hawk, Tommy Dugan—using ramps and obstacles to look like they're flying.

Back in 2015 we asked [why that game's jumping feels so good](https://www.killscreen.com/why-rocket-leagues-jumping-so-much-fun/), and the answer is the one Cohen chases here: the joy of unearned flight, gravity briefly negotiated rather than obeyed.

The prototype is old—"another old project I was super pumped on," per the caption—but the resurfacing reads like an artist letting you into the studio. Worth a download while the sketchbook is open.
