Read-Only Memory, the London publisher of design histories of videogames, says [*PlayStation: The First 30 Years*](https://readonlymemory.com/playstation-the-first-30-years?ref=killscreen.com) will begin shipping in November. The book was announced in September 2025 and first projected for spring. In an [April production update](https://readonlymemory.com/pages/ptf30y-update?ref=killscreen.com), the publisher said the book had gone to the printer and that final image and fact checks had pushed back production and freight. Ahead of release, founder Darren Wall spoke with *Reset* magazine about preserving the medium's history through design, print and physical artifacts, in [an interview announced this week](https://www.instagram.com/p/DfDNOakEZUM/?ref=killscreen.com).

The 400-page, large-format volume is a photographic tour of Sony Interactive Entertainment's industrial design archive: prototypes, concept sketches, development models and design studies, from mock-ups that never left the studio to the PlayStation 5\. Photographer Benedict Redgrove shot the objects; the publisher chose Redgrove on the strength of the 2019 book *NASA: Past and Present Dreams of the Future*. The text draws on the engineers and designers behind the hardware, including Ken Kutaragi, Yujin Morisawa and [Teiyu Goto](https://www.killscreen.com/tag/teiyu-goto/), who designed the original PlayStation controller.

It is art directed by Michael C Place and designed by Nicole Motby at Studio.Build. Place worked on the graphics for the PlayStation launch title *WipEout* and its sequels *WipEout 2097* and *WipEout 3* while at The Designers Republic, so the book's look comes from inside the console's original visual culture.

The standard edition costs $125\. A deluxe edition of 1,994 copies, with exposed binding, a clamshell box and prints, has sold out. The book was produced in direct collaboration with PlayStation.

A console maker's own archive is a large-studio subject, but the interest here is hardware as industrial design and the graphic designers who shaped how it looked. Killscreen has made that case before, in [the semiotics of controller design](https://www.killscreen.com/semiotics-controller-design/) and [a look at the PlayStation 2 as an object from outer space](https://www.killscreen.com/playstation-2-the-videogame-console-from-outer-space/).
