The Processing Foundation has given a first look at Processing 5, the next major version of the free creative-coding environment that [Casey Reas](https://www.killscreen.com/tag/casey-reas/) and [Ben Fry](https://benfry.com/?ref=killscreen.com) started in 2001\. [The new footage](https://www.instagram.com/p/DfDNayeTRER/?ref=killscreen.com), filmed by Elisa Unger, shows the release still in research and development, with experiments built on real-time 3D graphics and programming the GPU directly. No release date has been announced.

Processing 5 demos from "A Quarter Century of Processing" at Ars Electronica. Video by Elisa Unger for the Processing Foundation.

The demos were shown in "A Quarter Century of Processing," a talk and performance at Ars Electronica marking the project's 25th anniversary. Processing project lead [Moon Davé](https://softmoon.world/?ref=killscreen.com) walks through three of them: animation with support for glTF, the standard file format for 3D models; a compute shader that takes a flocking simulation from 200 birds to 20,000 while keeping interactive frame rates; and rigid-body physics in both 2D and 3D. Co-executive director Xin Xin also appears on stage.

The foundation is asking for donations to a development fund to support the release. The 25th-anniversary year has also brought its first fellowship track for games, [Gaming the System](https://www.killscreen.com/processing-foundation-gaming-track-2027-nominations/), backed by the Riot Games Social Impact Fund, with nominations closing Nov. 1.
