"the crunchier the better. my teeth would be worn down if i was to chew on my game," Freshly Baked Games wrote under [a clip](https://www.instagram.com/p/DXrj-PpEmZl/?ref=killscreen.com) of *Queen's Domain* back in April. Crunch, here, is a whole texture philosophy: low-resolution surfaces, hard dithered gradients, edges that catch the light wrong in the best way. They're selling something you look at until your teeth hurt.

What is being chewed is a revival of *King's Field*, the first-person dungeon series FromSoftware built in the 1990s, nearly two decades before *Dark Souls* made the studio a household name. *Queen's Domain* runs the classic setup—wash ashore on the Isle of Neasied, search for a missing father, descend through an interconnected island stacked with secrets and more than 50 melee weapons. Developed by Freshly Baked Games and published by Future Friends Games, it was revealed at the PC Gaming Show in December; a [free demo is on Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1799840/Queens%5FDomain/?ref=killscreen.com) now, with the full game listed as coming soon. GamesRadar reported 50,000 wishlists in its first week.

The comment thread under the clip is its own small delight: demo players are already lobbying the studio to keep a sword glitch that launches you forward, which is about as *King's Field* as fandom gets. For a lineage that has spent a decade arguing about difficulty, it is telling that the new heir leads with how it feels to look at—we dug into the [cultural heritage stacked inside Dark Souls's visions of hell](https://www.killscreen.com/visions-of-hell-dark-soulss-cultural-heritage/) years ago, and *Queen's Domain* is working that inheritance from the surfaces inward.
