[In an interview](http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/39648/Ruins%5Fexplores%5Fthe%5Fsadness%5Fof%5FChopins%5FPreludes.php?ref=killscreen.com) yours truly did for *Gamasutra*, I spoke with experimental game maker Jake Elliott about Chopin’s *Preludes*, which were the source of inspiration for his short game *[Ruins](http://cardboardcomputer.com/2011/09/15/ruins/?ref=killscreen.com)*. Jake explained to me how games might be entering a Romantic period.

> *The Preludes are really expressive. That’s another thing that drew me to them. They came at the beginning of the Romantic period, when music was moving into a more expressive and less formal period. The game ideas I’m working with, as well as the games I am playing right now, are similarly moving into Romantic and more expressive territory, instead of being overly formalistic.*

Plenty of recent games, such as the audibly sublime [Proteus](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWs%5FRKXkyu0&ref=killscreen.com) and the visually breathtaking [El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron](http://killscreendaily.com/articles/reviews/review-el-shaddai-ascension-metatron?ref=killscreen.com), support this idea. Of course, the recent release of the limb-severing [NeverDead](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQFGCXOTiK8&ref=killscreen.com) begs to differ.
