Sandra Youkhana and Luke Caspar Pearson—the London studio You+Pea—have spent a decade insisting that game space is real architecture, and their new book makes the case with the discipline's own instruments. [*Videogame Architecture: Building Virtual Spaces*](https://www.youandpea.com/videogame-architecture?ref=killscreen.com), [announced this month](https://www.instagram.com/p/Dc1eHIZEWua/?ref=killscreen.com) and arriving in October, works through 12 games—*Doom*, *Disco Elysium*, *Baldur's Gate 3*, *Elden Ring*, *The Sims 4* and *Yakuza Kiwami* among them—in plans, sections, 3D renderings and exploded diagrams: the documents an office would produce for a building that exists. John Romero, who drew the *Doom* levels the book now measures, writes the foreword.

The duo founded the Videogame Urbanism studio at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and when [we covered their essay for *Architectural Design* last month](https://www.killscreen.com/an-architecture-studio-now-works-inside-game-space/), we said that games reach audiences buildings never will. The book is that idea executed: 288 pages, 500 illustrations, and a stated debt to the experimental architecture monographs and videogame guides of the 1990s—two genres of book that never expected to share a shelf.

[Read-Only Memory's limited run](https://readonlymemory.com/products/videogame-architecture?ref=killscreen.com) of 1,000 copies ships in October with an exposed binding, a clamshell presentation box and a Risograph print of E1M1—*Doom*'s opening hangar, framed as a drawing worth owning. The Thames & Hudson hardback follows on October 22 in the U.K., per the studio, and [November 17 in the U.S.](https://www.thamesandhudsonusa.com/books/videogame-architecture-building-virtual-spaces-hardcover?ref=killscreen.com)

Killscreen has walked this intersection from the start—in 2016 we argued that [videogame architecture was failing the poor of the world](https://www.killscreen.com/videogame-architecture-is-failing-the-poor-of-the-world/). A decade on, the architects have finally arrived with measuring tools.
