Put it in the calendar before the calendar fills itself: A MAZE. / Berlin has dated its 16th edition for May 5–8, 2027, and released exactly 200 early-bird tickets, [announced on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/DcL%5F41JCD3Y/?ref=killscreen.com) in the festival's usual all-caps scarcity register. Four days, in their words, of arthouse games, performances, playful media, and “people from all over the world who like to play wild.” It's all at [a-maze.net](https://a-maze.net/?ref=killscreen.com).

I keep this particular date because A MAZE. is the festival whose lineup most reliably predicts a year of Killscreen coverage. (Fun side history: when I was starting Killscreen, Thorsten, the festival's founder, made his way to NYC and crashed at my apartment.) This spring's 15th edition drew 7,500 visitors and 1,700 professional participants across its program and satellite events, by [the festival's own wrap](https://a-maze.net/news/a-maze-berlin-2026-festival-wrap-and-media/?ref=killscreen.com)—and its awards have a habit of anointing work we end up living with. Jakob Kudsk Steensen's *OTHERWORLDS* [took the Human Human Machine Award](https://www.killscreen.com/otherworlds-won-a-mazes-human-human-machine-award/) this year and spent the summer as an institutional touring piece.

One detail for the makers reading: asked in the replies when submissions open, the festival says it wants to open award entries in December—earlier than previous cycles—with the plan still being finalized. If you are building something strange, that is your runway: roughly three months to get a build presentable, then a Berlin spring in front of the exact audience that plays it the way you hoped. Killscreen ran a workshop-recap eye over this year's edition already; expect us in the aisles again in 2027.

A MAZE. is where next year’s strangest games surface first—and surfacing them is the whole Killscreen beat. The free newsletter gets you the lineup reads before the lines form.
