The Yellow Light of Death is the blinking amber signal that a PlayStation 3 has died. Kara Güt's *YLOD \[video for a bricked ps3\]*—five and a half minutes, single channel, 2025—imagines what stays inside: a faulty character creation menu still haunting the console's interior, cycling glitched skins and corrupted interface residue long after play has ended. The video screened June 12–25 as the 130th edition of VRAL, Matteo Bittanti's online program of machinima and game video, [with an introduction and interview](https://www.gamescenes.org/event-kara-gut-june-12-25-2026-online/?ref=killscreen.com); Güt shared the news in [a post announcing the screening](https://www.instagram.com/p/DZgFBSOp2Zg/?ref=killscreen.com).

The tool is the story. The work was made with Lance McDonald's *Dark Souls* debug menu mod, a reverse-engineered restoration of developer tools that FromSoftware stripped from the shipped game. That makes the method archaeological twice over: excavated tools, aimed at excavated hardware. Bittanti's program note calls the result “an excavation of what a game system retains” after the conditions of play collapse—not glitch aesthetics, and not repair-video documentation either.

Güt has been working this vein for a decade, treating game architecture as a diagnostic system for intimacy: *Intimacy Mod* staged encounters between avatars through a *Skyrim* companionship mod, *Welcome to My Desert Nexus* was a three-act play performed live inside *Red Dead Online*, and *Lurker1* was cut from a Twitch archive whose performer and spectator accounts have both since been deactivated. Dead platforms are the through-line, and it's one we've followed too—*Visual Out* made a whole game of [embracing the glitches of a dying computer](https://www.killscreen.com/visual-asks-embrace-glitches-dying-computer/). *YLOD* also showed at No Place Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, and screened at Go Short in Nijmegen this April, where Güt was named Filmmaker in Focus. The console is bricked; the work runs fine.
